Decision making on suitability for ITU care – ICST

Decision making on suitability for ITU care

The criteria for managing a patient with Severe Respiratory Distress on an Intensive Care unit, or managing them on a COVID ward, must be undertaken by a senior clinical decision maker. NICE have created a COVID-19 rapid care guideline (attached below) which will help determine whether an adult patient is suitable for critical care.

This guideline categorises a patient according to their:

  1. Age (less than or more than 65 years)
  2. Frailty (according to Clinical Frailty Score)

Comorbidities and underlying health conditions should be considered in all cases. Frailty scoring systems should not be applied to people who have pre-existing disabilities.
