Examination of a patient with suspected COVID-19

There are some cardinal features of COVID-19 that should guide our examination of a patient:

  • Fever
  • Hypoxaemia, with oxygen saturations below the normal range (94-98%)
  • Normal respiratory rate, despite hypoxaemia
  • Normal blood pressure
  • Tachycardia
  • Fine bilateral crackles at the back of the chest, on examination of the chest
