Completing a death certificate and registering a death in COVID-19

There are some key changes relating to completing a death certificate and registering a death during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  1. In order for a doctor to complete a death certificate, they must have seen (including via video link) the patient in the 28 days before death, or alternatively in person after death.
  2. ‘COVID-19’ is acceptable wording for a direct or underlying cause of death
  3. A death certificate can be scanned by the bereavement office and sent (via secure email) to the registrar, who will accept an electronic copy.
