Coronavirus and the novel COVID-19 – ICST

Coronavirus and the novel COVID-19

Coronavirus are a large group of viruses, predominantly causing respiratory diseases. SARS-CoV-2 is the novel coronavirus responsible for the current outbreak, and the clinical syndrome associated with the virus is COVID-2.

The predominant feature of COVID-2 is a fever and a dry cough, as well as other typical features of respiratory tract infection.

From the person first becoming infected with the virus, people generally develop symptoms around day 5, and most people have complete recovery in two weeks.

For most people, this will be a mild disease; they will have minimal symptoms and be able to care for themselves at home.

For 20% of people, the disease will be more severe and for 5% of people will require intensive medical treatment, including ventilation.
