Decision making on suitability for ITU care
The criteria for managing a patient with Severe Respiratory Distress on an Intensive Care unit, or managing them on a COVID ward, must be undertaken by a senior clinical decision maker. NICE have created a COVID-19 rapid care guideline (attached below) which will help determine whether an adult patient is suitable for critical care.
This guideline categorises a patient according to their:
Comorbidities and underlying health conditions should be considered in all cases. Frailty scoring systems should not be applied to people who have pre-existing disabilities.
