Principles of an Antiviral and finding a cure for COVID-19

Antivirals are drugs used to treat viral infections, and usually target one specific virus. Antivirals are designed to target specific processes within the virus’ life cycle, and therefore make the virus non-infectious.

In COVID-19, the causative virus is the novel SARS-CoV-2, and we don’t have much information about antivirals that might be effective against this pathogen. Drug trials are currently looking to repurpose existing antivirals that we use for other viral infections to find out whether they will also be effective against this novel coronavirus.
