Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a method used to confirm the presence of the novel coronavirus from a respiratory sample taken from a patient. It works by making copies of the DNA (or RNA) in a sample, allowing scientists to identify sequences genetic material that are specific to SARS-CoV-2.
