The mental health impact of COVID-19 on NHS staff – ICST

The mental health impact of COVID-19 on NHS staff

Tutorial presented by Professor Jonathan Bisson, Psychiatrist, Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Cardiff University and Director of HHP Wales

The COVID-19 pandemic can have a negative psychological impact on healthcare professionals, and some individuals are experiencing a considerable degree of stress, anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder.

The following are a few simple tips for managing mental health issues, if you are struggling with your mental health:

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: keep hydrated, eat and sleep well, exercise and enjoy social contact with family and friends (even if it’s virtual)
  • Talk to people you trust or contact employee wellbeing services
  • Use strategies that have worked for you in the past to manage stressful situations
  • Contact your GP
  • Check out the free resources available through professional organisations
  • Contact Health for Health Professionals Wales

With good social support and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, most symptoms will resolve, but for some people these symptoms will become pathological and additional support should be sought.
